| The perfect location for the start of your motorcycling holiday with access to some of the finest countryside in WA. Situated only 97km from Perth in the Avon Valley, York is Western Australia's most historic inland town with its origins dating back to 1830. At one stage during the 19th century the town was the fourth largest in the State. York prospered mainly due to the fact that it became a staging post for prospectors on the way to the Goldfields and was the last available place to stock up for the 400 odd mile trek through the bush to Coolgardie/Kalgoorlie. Fortunately, the town escaped becoming a commercial centre and retained its old buildings. The importance of York has been acknowledged by the Australian Heritage Commission and the National Trust of Australia. The beautiful geographic location nestled between Mt Bakewell and Mt Brown on the banks of the Avon River and gives rise to the town's proud claim to be "Jewel of the Avon Valley". Stroll down Avon Terrace and live the history, enjoying the fine buildings, and pause to visit some of the great attractions. There are museums, galleries, pubs, cafes and restaurants. York offers a unique blend of Heritage sites and modern shopping. There is plenty to do in York! Activities in the district include Skydiving, Ballooning, Paragliding, Horse Riding, Swimming, Tennis, Croquet, Golf, Boot-scooting and Old Time Dancing in the magnificent York Town Hall. Visit a wonderful old church, the finely Restored Residency Museum, or the York Motor Museum to see an international collection of vehicles, or simply soak up the atmosphere. York is also a Festival Town, with Music and Cultural Festivals being held annually. The York Music Festival, held in September is Internationally renowned. Many activities also surround the Vintage Motor Vehicles. Some text information on this page supplied by The York Visitor Centre. | | |
